Fast 10 BTS Images Confirm Return of Charlize Theron’s Cipher

Charlize Theron announces her return for Fast & Furious 10, aka Fast X, in new behind-the-scenes set images. Theron joined the franchise with 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, playing Cipher, a cyberterrorist who blackmails Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto to take part in her plan to hijack nuclear weapons. By F9, Cipher has been captured by Kurt Russell’s Mr. Nobody, eventually breaking free and once again going after Dom (and his brother, John Cena’s Jakob Torretto). In the end, Cipher fails her mission and escapes, leaving her still an active threat to Dom and his crew.

Fast X is being directed by franchise regular Justin Lin and brings back the main cast of Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Sung Kang. Aquaman’s Jason Momoa has also come on board as this entry’s main villain, as well as Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson in an undisclosed role, and The Suicide Squad’s Daniela Melchior in a mysterious role. There are plenty of other stars that have appeared in the franchise before that could reappear, but thus far, those are the ones that have been announced.

However, one more recurring cast member can be added to the Fast X mix, as Theron has shared some behind-the-scenes set images that show Cipher is back for the next entry and rocking yet another new hairstyle, as has been her trademark thus far. The black-and-white images reveal that Theron’s Cipher has longer locks this go round and appears to be still carrying on with her stylistic attire. The images also tease a pair of armed and armored bodies, which hints at a death toll to come in whatever sequence Theron is filming. Take a look at Theron’s images below:

Given the ending of the last film, it isn’t much of a surprise that Theron is returning as Cypher. After all, F9 made it clear that her storyline wasn’t over. Theron has continued to walk the line between big-budget spectacle and action films (Prometheus, Atomic Blonde, The Old Guard) and more intimate, dramatic/comedic fare (Young Adult, Bombshell, Long Shot) over the years. Given her wide range of acting abilities, the return of Cipher will no doubt benefit the film, but it’s still a mystery how she ties into the storyline since Momoa is said to be the main villain.

While the cast announcements for Fast X have been notable thus far, they’ve also likely been holding back in order to keep a few surprises for fans when the movie releases. There are sure to be more casting additions throughout the filming of Fast & Furious 10, be it older characters from the series, guest appearances, or even potential resurrections, as has often been a theme with the series. Some are speculating that Gal Gadot’s Gisele, thought dead by the end of Fast & Furious 6, could make her return, which is entirely possible in the jump-the-shark world of The Fast & The Furious franchise.
