Vin Diesel Asks Dwayne Johnson To Return For Sequel

Vin Diesel has publicly asked Dwayne Johnson to return for Fast & Furious 10. Currently slated for release on April 7, 2023, Fast & Furious 10 will be helmed by longtime franchise director Justin Lin and will set the stage for the eleventh and final film in the franchise. Many of the major franchise players are set to return, but one notably absent is Dwayne Johnson who played Agent Hobbs in Fast Five and three subsequent sequels.

Johnson and Diesel famously feuded on the set of Fate of the Furious and the two never filmed a scene together. Tension was high and while Johnson walked away from the mainline series, Universal Pictures saw a way to keep one of the biggest stars in Hollywood happy while expanding one of their most profitable brands by making a spin-off film, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. A sequel to Hobbs & Shaw is currently in development, as it will hopefully continue the Fast & Furious brand after the mainline series wraps up.

It appears though that as the Fast & Furious franchise is coming to an end, they want to bring Jonhson back for the finale. Diesel posted on his Instagram a photo of the two in Fast Five, publicly asking for Johnson to return for Fast & Furious 10. Diesel appears to play off a sense of family, letting Johnson know that his children call him Uncle Dwayne and wanting to make the next film would be a fitting end for franchise star Paul Walker, who passed away in 2013 in the middle of filming Furious 7. The full message can be read below:

In July 2021, Johnson confirmed he would not be reprising his role in Fast & Furious 10 or 11. Johnson did wish his best to the cast and crew of the upcoming films but indicated that the sequels would be made without him. While stars like Tyrese Gibson have said the feud between himself and Johnson is over, the comments Diesel made earlier in the summer seemed like there was still some bad blood between the two stars. Ludacris, who also stars in the Fast & Furious franchise, described the feud as a “delicate situation.”

A 2023 release date means the film would have to begin filming sometime in 2022, and Johnson already has a large number of commitments, including a sequel to Jungle Cruise and a potential sequel to his upcoming DCEU film Black Adam. If Johnson did decide to return to Fast & Furious 10, his role may be a smaller one than fans may expect, more akin to a cameo or a one-scene walk-on for the film’s climax. For many fans of Fast & Furious, it would be a welcome return to see the two stars bury the hatchet and see Luke Hobbs and Dominic Torreto as family one more time.
