Vin Diesel & Helen Mirren Film London Car Chase in F9 BTS Set Video
A new behind-the-scenes video for F9: The Fast Saga sees Vin Diesel and Helen Mirren filming the London car chase sequence of the action film. The latest installment in the franchise saw Dominic Toretto forced to confront the demons of his past as his brother Jakob, who he turned his back on in their youth, teams up with cyberterrorist Cipher for a world-shattering plot. F9: The Fast Saga saw the return of Justin Lin to the director’s chair of the franchise in five years and the first not to be scripted by Chris Morgan since The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, on which Lin made his debut.

The cast for F9 saw the returns of franchise leads Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel and Sung Kang as well as recurring stars Jordana Brewster, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell and Charlize Theron with John Cena joining as newcomer Jakob. Following numerous delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the film finally hit theaters over the summer to generally mixed reviews from critics for its unrealistic action and poor script. It would set several pandemic box office records, grossing over $716 million worldwide to become the second highest-grossing film of the year.

In honor of the film’s home media release in the United Kingdom, GamesRadar+ has unveiled a BTS clip for F9: The Fast Saga. The featurette sees Mirren and Diesel gearing up for filming the London car chase sequence as well as highlighting Mirren’s love for performing her own driving stunts. Check out the video below:

The Fast & Furious franchise may be drifting into CGI-heavy set pieces with each new sequel, but still will utilize more practical processes for certain sequences and the London car chase in F9 certainly was one of the more grounded sequences in the franchise’s recent times. Though some of the BTS video keeps the passengers in the car shadowed during some of the filming, it is interesting to hear Mirren express her love for performing her own vehicular stunts and push to do so. It would be interesting to hear from Mirren and Diesel how much of the former’s lone appearance in the film saw her driving through London and how much was a stunt driver.
Mixed reviews aside, F9: The Fast Saga marked an interesting chapter all around for the franchise, testing out its box office potential amidst a global pandemic and incorporating flashbacks in the main character’s lives. The film also marked a bridging between the mainline Fast & Furious franchise and its spin-off Hobbs & Shaw with its Jason Statham-centric post-credits scene. With the tenth film still nearly two years away from hitting screens, audiences can catch up with F9: The Fast Saga on shelves on 4K Ultra-HD, Blu-ray and DVD now.
