Moroccan Kickboxing Star Jamal Ben Saddik Suspended for 6 Months Following GLORY Heavyweight Grand Prix Incident

In a major development in the world of kickboxing, renowned Moroccan fighter Jamal Ben Saddik has been handed a 6-month suspension following his involvement in an altercation at the GLORY Heavyweight Grand Prix earlier this year. This incident, which has made waves in the kickboxing community, occurred on March 9th after the semi-final match between Rico Verhoeven and Nabil Khachab. At the end of the fight, won by Rico Verhoeven over Nabil Khachab, Ben Saddik climbed into the ring and tried to pick a fight with the champion.

The tension between the heavyweights escalated rapidly post-match, resulting in a chaotic scene as corner men from both sides joined the fray. Amidst the turmoil, Ben Saddik, present as a corner man for Khachab, made a controversial kicking gesture towards Verhoeven, which has now led to significant disciplinary action.

GLORY, the event’s promoter, released a statement regarding the incident: “Following a thorough investigation of the in-ring altercation on March 9, 2024, during the GLORY Heavyweight Grand Prix semi-final, GLORY has decided to impose a 6-month suspension on Jamal Ben Saddik. His actions were deemed to have incited violence and posed a risk to participants, fans, and officials.”

This suspension not only affects Ben Saddik’s participation in GLORY events but also his involvement in any kickboxing activities within the Netherlands, due to the stringent Vechtsport Autoriteit (VA) Disciplinary Rules. These rules, which apply to all Dutch athletes and gyms, mandate strict adherence and enforce penalties for violations. Consequently, Ben Saddik will be sidelined from all events in the Netherlands for the duration of his suspension.

GLORY CEO Marshall Zelaznik adds: “In working with the VA and in keeping the precedent set by them, it was clear that our shared goal is to always represent the sport in the best light possible. The decision we made is in line with this objective. At GLORY, we will also review our procedures and processes to be sure we protect the sport of kickboxing, the amazing athletes that compete and our fans”.
